It has caused us to feel isolated from nature and sometimes to fear it, and to feel that nature is merely an exploitable resource. The animals and plants of urban parks and natural lands help to satisfy biophilia, our natural affinity and need for contact with other organisms. For children, these areas with their wildlife give an opportunity for the natural qualities of curiosity and exploration to be expressed, qualities which might otherwise be directed into less inspiring aspects of urban life.
