A newly fertilized ovum is called a zygote and is about the size of a period at the end of this sentence. Less than 1 week after fertilization, these cells have rapidly divided multiple times to become a blastocyst ready for implantation. After implantation, the developing infant is referred to as an embryo from week 2 to week 8, and this is when critical periods of intense development and rapid cell division occur. The developing infant has the beginnings of most body systems, as well as a beating heart, defined fingers and toes, and the beginnings of facial features. Following week 8, the developing infant is referred to as a fetus and continues to grow for the next 7 months. The developing infant is known as a fetus until birth.
