In a brief essay, explain how agenda setting theory and critical/cultural theory could each be used to explain why stories about the #MeToo movement of people reporting sexual harassment and abuse exploded in the fall of 2017.
What will be an ideal response?
Agenda setting theory suggests that stories that the media report are seen as important and that lead to people discussing them. The media do not tell people what to think but rather what to think about.
Critical/cultural theory suggests that there are problems that come from exploitation and the division of labor, when people are treated as “things to be used” rather than people who have value. The #MeToo story grew in importance when the victims of abuse and harassment started speaking up for themselves.
