Discuss the “sunny side” and “dark side” interpretations of postindustrial society. Using the current condition of the United States, explain whether you support the sunny or dark interpretation? Illustrate why using real-life examples.
What will be an ideal response?
For the sunny-siders, the emerging service-producing sectors mean new jobs for hospital administrators, medical technicians, accountants, financial analysts, hotel managers, and computer specialists. For the dark-siders, the service-producing sectors mean employment in lowly service occupations for fast-food workers, janitors, and hospital orderlies. Both, as it turned out were right, because the occupational structure was polarizing. Across the economy, there were ample opportunities for well-trained professionals, managers, and technicians.
But good blue-collar jobs were hard to find, especially in manufacturing, where production levels climbed as employment sank. For the unskilled and undereducated, service jobs were the likely alternative.
