William James discussed applications of psychology to the education of children. John Dewey established the first major educational psychology laboratory in the United States and established several important educational ideas. E. L. Thorndike initiated an emphasis on assessment and measurement. Mamie and Kenneth Clark conducted research on African American children's self-conceptions and identity. George Sanchez conducted research that demonstrated the cultural bias of intelligence tests against ethnic minority children. Leta Hollingsworth used the term "gifted" to describe children who scored exceptionally high on intelligence tests.
