Describe what happens to the brain in adolescence.

What will be an ideal response?

In early adolescence, the increase in sex hormones with puberty triggers a variety of neurological developments, including a second burst of synaptogenesis, resulting in a rapid increase of connections among neurons. Connections between the prefrontal cortex and various brain regions strengthen, permitting rapid communication, enhanced cognitive functioning, and greater behavioral control. Connections strengthen especially among areas associated with higher cognitive and emotional functions. These rapid changes and the corresponding shaping of the cortex make it likely that adolescence is a sensitive period for brain development; only in the first years of life are there as many rapid and significant changes.
