The ecological role that bacteria play as decomposers; no more pathogenic bacteria so many infectious diseases would be eliminated; the role that bacteria play in many food-making processes; loss of outstanding laboratory specimens for all types of research, etc. The thoughtful student will discuss the ramifications on all life on Earth in much more detail.
