Alms giving, or zakat, is the duty of sharing with the poor a small percentage of the wealth beyond one’s basic expenses. Fasting, or sawm, is central during Ramadan, the ninth month in Islam’s lunar calendar. At least once in a Muslim’s lifetime, a believer is expected to make a pilgrimage, or hajj, to Mecca.
