Using information from the reading, describe the Atlanta Compromise.

What will be an ideal response?


Booker T. Washington articulated the Atlanta Compromise in a speech in 1895. In this compromise, Southern blacks would agree to work, forgo their own political ambitions, and submit to white political rule. In exchange, southern whites would guarantee basic education, reduce intimidation, and allow for due process in the law.
