Up until the 1930s it was assumed that the carbohydrates plants produced resulted from the combination of carbon atoms with water, and the oxygen released came from the splitting of the carbon dioxide molecule. You are a scientist testing this
hypothesis. You have available to you water labeled with radioactive oxygen atoms and carbon dioxide labeled with radioactive oxygen atoms. Design an experiment to determine whether the oxygen produced during photosynthesis comes from the splitting of carbon dioxide or the splitting of water.
What will be an ideal response?
Take plant A and expose it to unlabeled carbon dioxide plus labeled water. Collect the oxygen produced and determine whether it is radioactive. Take plant B and expose it to labeled carbon dioxide and unlabeled water. Collect the oxygen from this plant and determine whether it is radioactive. If the oxygen produced by plant A is radioactive, then it is coming from the splitting of water. If the oxygen from plant B is radioactive, then it is coming from the splitting of carbon dioxide.
