Explain the main aspects of offender profiling.
What will be an ideal response?
Profiling is done by extensive interviewing and formal psychological testing of incarcerated killers in order to develop a typology (the classification of offenders into different types) based on personality and other offender characteristics (FBI, 2008). Law enforcement officials have always done some sort of rudimentary profiling based on their experiences regarding “what sort of person would have done this.” It is only recently that it has been elevated to an art--it cannot, however be considered a science because profiles do not always fit the persons eventually convicted of the crimes.
