The eggs of monotremes are much smaller than those of lizards of comparable body size. What is a possible reason for this?
What will be an ideal response?
Monotremes are ovoviviparous: the young receive their nourishment from uterine secretions while the eggs are retained in the uterus, and they need only enough yolk to sustain them for the brief time between egg laying and hatching, after which they rely on milk from the mother. The monotreme egg is smaller because it doesn't need the larger amount of yolk that lizards need for their entire (much longer) time in the egg.
