What are the components of an effective pitch? What steps need to be taken before delivering a pitch?
What will be an ideal response?
Before pitching a story idea, a PR needs to be a constant reader/observer of the news media. You should determine the right reporter to approach. This requires that you do the research to find reporters interested in the topic, and leave others out of the pitch altogether. This analysis is best accomplished by using a commercial database--such as Meltwater, Cision, or Business Wire--to search the topic, media and geographic area you are interested in. Once you know who to approach, you can begin to develop your approach or pitch. The pitch, to be effective, should include a short summary of the story; a connection or relevance to the publication and its readers; and be accurate, intriguing and complete.
