Describe the differences of brain functioning and development between individuals who have disabilities in math and reading compared to those who do not have learning disabilities in those areas.

What will be an ideal response?

The answers may include that those with reading disabilities typically have a deficit in phonological processing. They show less activation in several areas of the left hemisphere compared to those who do not have a reading disability. Research has also shown that those with a reading disability also show more activation in the frontal region to make up for deficits in other regions. Math disability is a deficit in the ability to transfer knowledge into long-term memory as well as retrieve that knowledge from long-term memory. Those with math disability typically display lower activation in the intraparietal sulcus compared to those who do not have math disability. Students with math disability also show a deficit in network connections between the parietal and occipito-temporal areas as well as in the parietal regions.
