What are functional foods?

What will be an ideal response?

Certain foods contain more beneficial properties than others. These foods are known as functional foods. Choosing to consume more functional foods over conventional foods is based on the idea that functional foods have added health benefits beyond their nutritional value. Although the United States through its regulatory agency the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not officially recognize the category of functional foods, this categorical label is recognized in Canada, Europe, and Japan. This concept of food as medicine is not novel. In fact, the founder of medicine Hippocrates advised over 2500 years ago to "let food be thy medicine and medicine thy food.".
