You are a supervisor and several members of your group are completing paperwork in your squad room, along with four other officers, one female. You overhear one male officer tell another male officer an inappropriate sexual joke involving a female

Several officers laugh at the joke, including the female officer. What would you do, and why?

To begin, this could be a difficult response as "You" could be a male or female supervisor. At any rate, the question is dealing with the issue of sexual harassment and is delving in the area of "hostile work environment." Although it appears that everyone in the squad room is enjoying the story, this is the first step towards eventual sexual harassment complaint. It might not come from the female worker, but it could come from another source such as another female worker walking down the hall. You have to say something in the order of "knock it off" and then make an assessment of whether this was an isolated incident or a continuing pattern. If it is the former. then the supervisor will have to conduct formal counseling, remedial training, and perhaps discipline to address the behavior. Remember, any sexual harassment lawsuit is not only expensive, but detrimental to organizational reputation.
