The diversity of America's school population increased dramatically during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Latin Americans, Eastern Europeans, and Southern Europeans followed earlier waves of Western- and Northern-European immigrants such as the Irish and Germans. As with Native Americans, the goal of immigrant education was rapid assimilation into an English-speaking Anglo-European society that did not welcome racially or ethnically different newcomers.
