Compare and contrast hard and soft power and the appropriate uses for each.

Hard power tends to be derived from one’s position in the hierarchy of the organization. There are three types of hard power: coercive; formal/legitimate; and reward/resources. Coercive forces people to do something based on the threat of punishment. Legitimate comes from a position within the structure of the organization, such as being the manager of a department. Reward/resource comes from the ability to provide rewards or deliver resources. There are two bases of soft power: expert and referent. Expert comes from having knowledge, skills, or expertise. Personal or referent power is more nebulous. It comes from followers having respect and admiration for a leader and is very important as a source of influence. Each of the five forms of power has its place and can be used together. Soft power form a better foundation of power in the long run.
