Compare and contrast relative dating and absolute dating for geologic time. What techniques are

used for determining each type of date? What are the limitations of each type of date? What will be an ideal response?

The student should discuss the fundamental geologic principles (e.g., principle of superposition,
etc) and how they relate to the relative Geologic Time Scale. Also important is discussing the
absolute dating techniques, including radiometric dating, for example. It should be clear that
both types of dates have limitations, including analytical limitations for radiometric dating and
structural constraints (e.g., the possibility of overturned beds) for relative dating.
