When this NIC first connected to a network, it started to negotiate automatically with the hub or switch to determine the other device's highest speed. If they both did 100BaseT, then you got 100BaseT. If the hub or switch only did 10BaseT, then the NIC did 10BaseT. All of this happened automatically.
