Describe two ways in which an atom can be excited

What will be an ideal response?

An atom can become excited through collisions with other atoms, which happens very often in a hot gas, where atoms move rapidly and collide often. An atom can become excited by absorbing a photon. Only a photon with exactly the right amount of energy can move the electron from one level to another.
