Daniel is filming a script that he has written for his directing class. He asked his friend, Fred,
to help with the camera equipment during the shoot. During the filming, Daniel gets the
feeling that Fred is taking over the project.
Daniel feels hurt but wants to continue to work
with Fred without having any misunderstandings. Describe at least two ways, giving specific
examples, that Daniel can use to enhance his perceptual accuracy of Fred?s behavior in this
situation.
What will be an ideal response?
First, Daniel could simply increase his awareness by not being consumed by his own
negative emotions and taking the time to fully listen and be more verbally and
nonverbally aware, so he can interpret Fred?s behavior more accurately. For example,
Fred may just view his behavior as being helpful. Daniel may also become more aware
of his own communication. Perhaps Daniel is not clearly communicating Fred?s role in
the project. Secondly, Daniel should be careful to avoid stereotypes. For example, it may
be tempting for Daniel to stereotype Fred as a pushy and controlling individual.
Finally, Daniel could check his perceptions by either performing an indirect or direct
perception check. In order to use an indirect perception check, Daniel simply needs to
carefully observe Fred?s behavior and determine if his perception of Fred wanting to
take over his project is true. He could also use a direct perception check by either
asking another person who knows about the situation or asking Fred himself. If Daniel
asks Fred himself, Daniel should describe Fred?s behavior, offer his interpretation of
Fred?s behavior, and ask whether or not his perception is correct.
