Why did the British and the French fail during the 1930s in their efforts to keep Hitler in check? Why did the British and Americans decide to focus on defeating Germany during World War II?
Ans:
They attempted to, by appeasing Hitler. The Munich agreement FORCED Czechoslovakia to give up one third of its territory, and disband 35 Divisions of troops, that literally destroyed the country, and it disappeared into German, Polish and Hungarian hands. They gave Hitler Czechoslovakia, and thought this meant “Peace in our time” in Europe. They were wrong.
The treaty with Poland for the British and French to go to war with Germany if Germany invaded Poland was a last ditch attempt to warn Hitler off, but his secret agreement with the Soviets encouraged him as he believed he could defeat the Poles before the French and the British could mass their armies ( he was right). The British barely had time to get their troops to the continent before the Poles surrendered, and the French took over 8 months to fully mobilize.
By the time the Germans invaded Denmark and Norway, the British Government was in disarray, and Chamberlain could not form a ‘unity’ Government for the war. So Churchill took over as leader of the Conservatives and Prime Minister of the ‘unity’ Government to fight the war.
