Describe how the federal government is protecting consumers online regarding spam.
What will be an ideal response?
In an effort to protect consumers online, the government passed an antispam act known as the CAN-SPAM Act. Spam is unsolicited e-mail that advertises a product or service and many times attempts to deceive the consumer through false advertising. Part of the antispam act includes provisions that prohibit online marketers from falsifying the "from" field and information in the subject line to trick consumers into opening an unsolicited e-mail. It also requires the sender to provide a physical address of the producer of the e-mail and specifically label any pornographic links with adult-content warnings. The law imposes an affirmative obligation on the sender to notify the recipient of procedures to opt out of receiving any future e-mail from the sender. The FTC has also used its enforcement authority to file civil complaints against companies that are engaged in spamming as part of their marketing strategy.
