We are here in a general sense because first and foremost we are American citizens and we are determined to apply our citizenship to the fullness of its means.” Rosa Parks, a seamstress and well-known activist in Montgomery’s African American community, had been arrested and put in jail for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger. Montgomery’s black community had long endured the humiliation of 2 a strictly segregated bus system. The day of the mass meeting, over 30,000 African Americans had answered a hastily organized call to boycott the city’s buses in protest of Parks’s arrest.
