What is the difference between an acronym and an acrostic?

An acronym is a "word" made up of the first letters of concepts you are trying to remember. An example of an acronym is PEN, which stands for proton, neutron, and electron (the parts of the atom). An acrostic is a "sentence" (often a nonsense sentence) in which the first letter of each word represents a concept you are trying to remember. An example of an acrostic is, "My very educated mother just sent us nine pizzas." In this sentence, the first letter of each word represents one of the nine planets (Mars, Venus, Earth, Mercury, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) in the solar system.
