What is causing the change in the marriage and family systems described by Hackstaff?

What will be an ideal response?

Hackstaff notes that many of the changes in modern marriages and families are induced
externally, in that the institutions of marriage and family change in adapting to change in
conditions in the larger society. Modern requirements of corporate work do not support
family stability, in requiring greater and greater time and effort at the office, difficulty in
getting time off for family activities, and limiting flexibility for meeting family needs
(medical appointments, school, sickness, etc.). These factors particularly impact lower
income families, diminishing male capabilities for supporting the family financially in low
income families, requiring wives to work, and limiting time for family activities. Thus, the
divorce rate is a reflection of persons' incapability to resolve their marital and family
responsibilities.
Hackstaff notes that a key solution to poverty is reinforcing marriage and the nuclear
family structure in society, and declining wages for workers worsens family stability. To
Hackstaff, American society needs to reinforce males roles and capabilities to provide
financial support for their family, enable women to perform both work roles and family
care roles, engender ways to support, strengthen family stability and unity, and enhance
relational support of family members.
