Describe the nature of indeterminate sentencing, and explain its positive aspects. What led some states to abandon indeterminate sentencing?
What will be an ideal response?
• The indeterminate sentencing model is characterized primarily by vast judicial choice. It builds on the belief that convicted offenders are more likely to participate in their own rehabilitation if such participation will reduce the amount of time that they have to spend in prison. However, indeterminate sentencing may lead in inequity and sentences influenced by race, gender, or social class. It also may produce much shorter imprisonment than the sentence on its face would indicate.
