America's experience with police-race relations can be traced back to 1619 when the first slaves from Africa landed in Jamestown, Virginia. Slaves from Africa did not come willingly to America and resisted the institution of slavery in various ways. Slave patrols played an important role in controlling slavery. Most counties in the South had slave patrols. Slave patrols checked the passes of slaves when they left plantations.
