In the latter part of the nineteenth century, cycling was both a popular pastime and a serious competitive sport. The bicycle provided a means of transportation as well as a mode of racing by the serious speed-seeking athlete. In Europe, Australia, and America, cycling clubs and cycling stars were venerated by fans from all walks of life.
Before the Tour de France (which started in 1903) became cycling's premier event and long before Lance Armstrong became a household name, there was Marshall W. "Major" Taylor, the first superstar of cycling.
The League of American Wheelmen (LAW) was the organization that granted official sanction to bicycle racing in America. If you earned a living as a cyclist or raced as a cyclist in the "big events," it was necessary to hold membership in the LAW.
