Former slaves who escaped their captors established maroon societies. These societies were generally located far off the beaten path (hence our modern day use of the term "marooned" . These societies provided a means to protect African culture in the Caribbean. The languages spoken by Maroon societies often draw heavily from native African languages. Many nations of the Rimland, most notably Suriname and Guyana, possess Maroon societies in their population.
