Describe four Maltese water myths and the actual facts about water related to the myth.
What will be an ideal response?
Myth: The natural occurring limestone removes salt from the groundwater, and thus as sea levels increase, there will be more fresh water. Fact: The limestone does not remove salt from the seawater. As sea level increases, the amount of available groundwater will decrease.
Myth: The groundwater table is replenished by water from the Nile River or other rivers on the European continent, and the groundwater supply is inexhaustible.
Fact: The groundwater table is not linked to water from the Nile. The groundwater table is already being depleted.
Myth: Deeper wells will provide better water quality. Fact: The failure rate of all wells is increasing due to deteriorating water quality.
Myth: Crops grown with reused water are inferior and have a shorter shelf life than those grown with groundwater.
Fact: There are some legitimate concerns or risks to using recycled water for agricultural use; however there are also risks with using very saline water from inadequate wells.
