Explain the ovarian cycle.
What will be an ideal response?
It is related to the monthly maturation of an egg; it lasts for approximately 28 days.
Two phases: follicular and luteal.
The follicular phase starts after end of menstruation. The primordial follicle ripens and becomes a
primary follicle. Follicular cells form the epithelium around the oocyte and become a secondary follicle.
From 1 to 14 days of the cycle, it releases large amounts of estradiol. During the ovulation, LH and FSH
affect the release of an ovum from the follicle. The secondary follicle ruptures, and the released egg is
caught by fimbriae. After that, the corpus luteum is formed on the ovary on the place of a ruptured
follicle, and that is the luteal phase. The corpus luteum secretes progesterone and some estradiol. If
pregnancy does not occur, levels of these hormones signal to the hypothalamus to decrease LH, and the
corpus luteum begins to degenerate. This phase lasts from days 14 to 28 of the ovarian cycle.
