Explain why split systems were developed

What will be an ideal response?

For many air conditioning systems, it is not practical to place all components in a single package, particularly those that involve the use of air cooled condensers. The air cooled condenser must have access to outside air so it is best placed outside. For this reason split systems have been developed with the inside unit consisting of a fan coil unit, with or without heating, an outside mounted air cooled condensing unit, and connecting refrigerant piping between the two.
