What is the minimum daily requirement for cholesterol?
What will be an ideal response?
Dietary cholesterol is not necessary because the liver synthesizes all that the body needs. The liver manufactures about 900 milligrams of cholesterol per day. This is three times greater than the 300 milligrams the average American consumes daily. However, if cholesterol is consumed, the body adjusts the amount it synthesizes. Normally, the total amount of cholesterol remains constant because the rate of cholesterol synthesis in the liver is under feedback control. When the dietary intake is high, liver synthesis is low; when intake is low, synthesis increases.
