Using the example of a person losing his job at the post office where he has worked for the last 15 years, define and give an example of what his primary appraisal and secondary appraisal could be.

What will be an ideal response?

Primary appraisal refers to the perception of what's at stake. This means it could be a harm, threat or challenge. The person might feel a sense of threat at first: threat to his self-esteem and threat to the well-being of his family because of the financial loss. Secondary appraisal refers to the perception of what coping options are available. The person might think of people in his social network who might have leads on a job and use that social support reduce stress. He might also think of the last time he had a challenge and think of how he overcame it. Therefore, he might tell himself that he can get through this.
