Explain how "lake-effect snow" occurs

As an example, when cold, dry cP or cA air from Canada moves southeastward across the Great Lakes the air mass picks up moisture, and the humidity increases. When this modified cP or cA air reaches frigid land on the leeward shores of the Great Lakes, it produces large amounts of lake-effect snow.
