Acid deposition is a secondary pollutant, formed in the atmosphere when sulfur and nitrogen oxides dissolve in water to produce sulfuric acid and nitric acid. Acid deposition can affect both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, in addition to human-made structures.
Aquatic ecosystems: Acid rainfall can dissolve aluminum and other toxic metals from soil. High levels of aluminum clog the gills of fish and also inhibit development of their skeletons.
Terrestrial ecosystems: Forests are negatively impacted by acid deposition when acidic rainwater leaches nutrients and minerals necessary for plant growth from the soils.
Human-made structures: Dry acid deposition is damaging to stone structures, gradually eroding buildings and historic architecture.
