Discuss the development and use of benzodiazepines. What are the pros and cons of these drugs?
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Benzodiazepines were developed in the 1960s to have a selective effect on anxiety instead of producing a generalized reduction in the body's overall level of functioning. Valium, Ativan, and Xanax are the most commonly known. They can be long-acting and taken orally or injected for a quick effect. Shorter-acting benzodiazepines can be used for sleeping problems. They are absorbed relatively slowly into the bloodstream through the small intestine. They are safer than barbiturates as respiratory centers are not affected. Caution is needed when prescribed for elderly. Increased risks of falls, broken bones, and dementia. No tolerant effects occur when taken at prescribed doses, but there is tolerance to the sedative effects. There are some physiological symptoms that appear when benzodiazepines are withdrawn.
