When developing a new lobbying relationship, or fostering an existing relationship, it is important to
remember:
a) Make promises, even if you are not sure you can deliver and don't be afraid to be argumentative,
as this shows the legislator you are not afraid to take a stand on issues of concern.
b) Make a point to spend time with legislators whose position is against yours, and don't overload a
visit to a legislator with too many issues.
c) Expect that legislators are familiar with the issues you are discussing with them, and don't worry
about knowing which committees the legislator sits on.
d) Never admit that you don't know something as this shows weakness, and don't be offended if the
legislator cannot meet with you in person, and asks you to meet with staff instead.
