In an essay discuss the religions present in Central Asia and describe any religious conflicts that have arisen in the region.
What will be an ideal response?
Although Islam is the primary religion of the region, there are many variations and interpretations of the religion in Central Asia. Some groups take a very strict and orthodox interpretation of Islamic ideas?such as the Pashtun in Afghanistan. On the other hand nomadic groups of the northern steppes have been considered to be relatively lax in their religious practices. During the Soviet era most religious activities were discouraged. China severely
suppressed Islam in Xinjiang and Tibet through the 1960s and 1970s. In the post-Soviet era religious belief began to reassert itself in the region, particularly through Islamic fundamentalism, in a few areas of the region. The only Buddhist part of the region is in Mongolia and Tibet. Chinese control of Tibet since the late 1950s meant the suppression of Tibetan Buddhism because it was linked to nationalist desires of indigenous Tibetans.
