What will be the role of government in affecting the transition from nonrenewable, polluting energy sources to renewable, environmentally-friendly energy sources?
What will be an ideal response?
Currently, large government subsidies in the form of tax breaks and grants support the traditional fossil fuel and nuclear energy producers. If those subsidies were removed, all energy sources would at least be on an equal footing. If the hidden social, health, and environmental costs from fossil fuel and nuclear energy production were considered and taxed accordingly, the non-polluting energy sources would become even more attractive. To entice consumers, governments could institute a fee program for using polluting sources and inefficient machines (cars, motors, etc.) and a rebate program for using non-polluting energy sources and highly efficient machines.
