Summarize the research findings that looked at the relationship between size, neuronal numbers, and intelligence.

What will be an ideal response?

When determining the relationship between brain size and level of intelligence: 1. Einstein's brain was lighter than the average brain. However, when looking at neuronal numbers, there was no difference compared to normal brains. One study found a higher ratio of glial cells to neurons in the left parietal lobe but not in the right parietal lobe or the frontal lobes. He showed larger parietal lobes compared to normal brains. These areas are involved in mathematical ability and visual-spatial processing.
2. There is some correlation between brain size and intelligence, based on a meta-analysis of 88 studies, but the correlation was small (.24). On average, men have larger brains than women, but there is no gender difference on intelligence test based on differences in brain size. 3. More important than brain size is the number of neurons packed into the cortex. 4. The volume of gray and white matter seems to be more accurate predictors of intelligence compared to brain size.
