Answer: A selective medium restricts the growth to a particular phenotype of interest. For example, a penicillin-containing medium could be used to select for microorganisms resistant to penicillin. Halophilic microbes could also be selected for by including a high concentration of salt to the medium, which would ensure non-halophiles could not grow on the selective medium. A differential medium does not restrict growth of particular organisms but instead permits the identification of a particular phenotype. For example, acid production used as a proxy for sugar fermentation can be observed through the addition of a pH-indicating dye into the medium.
