Newspapers, television, books, and social media. Under Saudi Arabia’s Basic Law, the role of media is to educate and inspire national unity. Television was introduced in the 1960s by the royal family as a propaganda tool. The government licenses all bookshops, printing presses, and public relations agencies to ensure that standards of taste are maintained. Most newspapers are privately owned but subsidized in varying degrees by the government.
