Valid measurement requires the following elements: measuring directly socially significant target behaviors, measuring a dimensions of the target behavior relevant to the question or concern about the behavior, and ensuring that the data are representative of the behavior's occurrence under conditions and during times that are most relevant to the question or concern about behavior. Validity is compromised when any of these elements are suspect.
