Glaucoma, or increased ocular pressure, affects African Americans more often than Caucasians. The incidence in African Americans is 1 in 10, whereas in Caucasians it is 1 in 50 . Glaucoma is the second leading cause of permanent blindness in the United States and the leading cause among African Americans. Cataracts, or opacity of the lens, are seen more often in the elderly. The patient with cataracts may complain of a decrease in vision, abnormal color perception, and glare, especially at night. Macular degeneration is related to retinal aging and is found predominantly in persons over age 55 . It is the most common cause of loss of vision in this age group. Otosclerosis refers to fixation of the footplate of the stapes in the middle ear. It is a common cause of conductive hearing loss in young adults.
