What does a student need to learn to become a skilled user of the dictionary?
What will be an ideal response?
The following techniques and methods should be considered when helping young students better understand dictionary usage:
1 Start with predictionaries (have limited numbers of words that are defined through illustrations, usually used in grades 1 and 2)
2 Later try ?first dictionaries? (advanced predictionaries that use sentences and pictures to define words but do not give syllabications or pronunciation)
3 Use glossaries (anthologies of major reading programs and content-area texts)
4 Use standard dictionaries (by about grade 3, as long as students know how to locate words, find definitions learn pronunciations, and determine correct spelling and usage)
These activities may be included in teaching students to use standard dictionaries: Locating the words to be looked up Locating and understanding meanings Understanding homographs Constructing the correct pronunciation Using electronic dictionaries Understanding the dictionary as a tool Using English learner dictionaries (for ELL students)
