Explain the steps that should be included in the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders.
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: The first step is a developmental screening and surveillance. Screening tests should be given to all children during their well-child visits at age 9, 18, 24, and 30 months of age. Additional screening is warranted if the child is at high risk.
The second step in the process is a comprehensive evaluation by a multidisciplinary team of professionals. Typical evaluations include clinical and educational observations, caregiver interviews, developmental histories, psychological testing, speech-language assessment, and possibly one or more diagnostic scales. Because ASD is a complex disorder, neurological and genetic testing may be appropriate.
