How did more than one theory of abnormal psychology develop?
What would be an ideal response?
Ans: As in the case of the development of all other scientific models, the development of abnormal psychology as a discipline involves several proposed theories, that were rigorously tested and subsequently modified or rejected based on the gathered empirical support. If one were to trace the roots of abnormal psychology, it began with the belief that people demonstrating abnormal behavior were possessed by malevolent spirits. This explanation today may seem ridiculous, however, the reason why we may now opine so is because this view was not found to hold true upon extensive investigation. Similarly, the other theories that have emerged over the years offer reasonable accounts of human behaviour but have not been able to fully explain abnormal mental processes and behaviour.
